A Generous Couple Leaves a Big Mark on USC’s Medical School
Florence, South Carolina, USASun May 24 2026
The University of South Carolina made a major change to its medical school this year. They renamed it after Florence doctor Edward Floyd and his wife, Kay. The announcement happened during a private gathering on May 22. The decision honors years of support and giving back to the university.
Edward and Kay Floyd gave over $30 million to USC in their lifetime. They invested in scholarships and faculty, helping students and the healthcare field. But their impact wasn’t just about money. They were deeply involved in the community. Edward served on USC’s Board of Trustees for 42 years, even leading it for a while. He started his own vascular surgery practice in Florence. Kay worked in South Carolina’s farming industry and helped run one of the first vascular labs in the state.
Both Floyds graduated from USC, keeping a tradition in the family. Edward was part of a four-generation legacy of graduates. Sadly, Kay passed away in 2023 after 66 years of marriage. Edward followed her in January at 91. Their daughter, Coleman Floyd Buckhouse, took Edward’s spot on the board in 2024. She said they believed in improving lives and creating opportunities at USC.
