Big donation boosts emergency care in Kingston

Kingston, Ontario, CanadaTue Jun 09 2026
A Kingston man just gave $1. 25 million to help emergency rooms in the city work better. The money buys new machines that take clearer pictures of patients faster. These aren’t just any machines—they’re the kind doctors say can make a real difference when someone is really sick. The donation pays for five new tools. Two are big X-ray machines that stay in the emergency department. One is a smaller X-ray machine on wheels so doctors can take pictures without moving the patient. There’s also a camera that helps doctors see inside throats and another that takes quick pictures of hearts during emergencies. All of this was chosen after talking to nurses and doctors who actually use the equipment every day.
Stephen Sorensen, the person who gave the money, said he doesn’t just write checks and leave. He wants to make sure the tools actually help patients right away. His approach is different because he focuses on what doctors say they need most, not just what sounds good. KHSC handles emergencies for over 650, 000 people in southeastern Ontario. With these new machines, doctors can find problems quicker and start treatment faster. That matters because in emergencies, every minute counts. This isn’t the first time Sorensen has helped the hospital. Before, he donated machines that use AI to look at hearts and a portable MRI for ICU patients. Each gift builds on the last, making sure Kingston keeps up with the best medical technology.
