Child Tragically Killed in Drive‑By, Four Men Sentenced

Athens, Georgia, USATue Jun 09 2026
A 3‑year‑old boy lost his life when a bullet ricocheted into his home during a drive‑by shooting in Georgia. The incident happened while he and his brother were watching television. Four men involved in the attack have now received prison sentences. Julian Cubillos, age 19, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Because he did not fire the weapon and helped investigators, he was given a 20‑year term. The other three—Desmontrez Mathis (24), Jayden Brown (18) and Dakious Echols (20)—were found guilty of malice murder and other charges. Each was sentenced to life in prison.
The defendants were members of the Everybody Eats gang, which aimed to boost its standing by targeting a rival. On March 8, they drove to the Hallmark Mobile Home Park in Athens and fired into a house where the young brothers were seated. Kyron, 3, died after a bullet struck his chest. His older brother, 9, survived with non‑life‑threatening injuries. Georgia’s Attorney General Chris Carr said the verdicts should bring some closure to Kyron’s family. He emphasized that such senseless violence must be stopped and that the state will continue to fight gang activity. The mother, Shanita Smith, expressed relief at the guilty verdicts. She noted that her family has moved away from Athens and that the older brother feels guilt over the tragedy. The incident remains a stark reminder of how unchecked gang conflicts can devastate innocent lives.
