From penniless to in-demand: How two creators said no to a big payday

Back in the 1990s, two aspiring writers, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, moved to Los Angeles with nothing but ambition and used clothes. For half a decade, they struggled just to survive, with Stone sometimes sleeping on a pile of dirty clothes because he couldn’t afford a bed. Success seemed far off, but their persistence eventually paid off. Once their show South Park exploded in popularity, Parker and Stone found themselves flooded with work offers. Instead of picking carefully, they said yes to almost everything—including a sports comedy called BASEketball and a charity album called Chef Aid. Suddenly, they were rubbing shoulders with Hollywood heavyweights like George Lucas. The money was welcome, but too many projects meant spreading themselves too thin.
At the same time, a movie studio approached them with a tempting offer: writing a prequel to the 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber. Jim Carrey and the Farrelly brothers were already attached, and the studio gave Parker and Stone plenty of time to work. Still, they never truly committed to the script. Why? Perhaps because by then, they had discovered their own unique voice with South Park, which made the prequel idea feel out of place. When Parker and Stone released their own movie in 1999, they realized a Dumb and Dumber prequel would clash with their style. They decided not to go half-way. In the end, they returned a $2 million payment just to avoid making a film they didn’t believe in. As Stone put it at the time, making a half-hearted movie would have been “just gonna disrespect the last movie. ” Years later, without their involvement, the studio released Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd in 2003. The result was underwhelming—a prequel that didn’t capture the original’s charm, proving Parker and Stone made the right call.
