China’s Arms Game: Strong Sales, Weak Reach

ChinaTue Jun 09 2026
China has spent decades building a powerful weapons industry. The country now appears in the top five worldwide when it comes to selling military gear, according to a respected global tracker. Yet the real story is more nuanced than those numbers suggest. A key problem is that China’s armaments have never faced a major war in recent memory. Most of its weapons were tested decades ago, not against modern combat scenarios. Because of this lack of recent battlefield validation, many buyers remain skeptical. The country offers three big selling points: advanced technology, very low prices, and no hidden conditions. These features make Chinese arms tempting for a few nations that need to arm quickly or cheaply. However, those advantages have not translated into widespread popularity.
China’s export growth has been very modest in the last few years. Even as global arms sales hit new highs, China’s share of the market has barely increased. The main buyers are a small cluster of allies and partners, often tied to political or economic alliances. In short, China’s weapons business is powerful on paper but limited in practice. It has a strong production base and attractive prices, yet its lack of recent combat experience and concentrated customer base keep it from becoming a dominant global player.
