Military religion list sparks debate over faith freedom

Washington, D.C., USATue Jun 09 2026
The U. S. military just changed how troops list their religion—and not everyone is happy. The Pentagon slimmed down the list of recognized faiths from over 200 to just 31. Now, soldiers can pick from major religions like Christianity or Islam, but smaller groups like Wicca, paganism, or even atheism aren’t on the menu.
Mormons are particularly upset because their faith isn’t recognized as Christian, even though they call themselves Christians. Some Republican leaders in Utah, where many Mormons live, are calling the move unfair. One senator even said it insults a religion followed by people who serve the country with pride. Others argue the government shouldn’t pick which beliefs matter. The Defense Department says the change is about making things simpler for military chaplains. They need to know what faiths their troops follow to support them better. But critics say the move ignores smaller groups and sends a message that some religions don’t count.
