Peru is in a tough spot. They need to decide if they will let a former leader's ex-prime minister, Betssy Chavez, leave the country safely. She's been staying at the Mexican embassy in Lima since Peru cut ties with Mexico.

This isn't just about one person. It's part of a bigger problem. Peru and Mexico have been at odds for a while. Things got worse when Mexico gave asylum to Chavez. She's accused of helping Peru's former president, Pedro Castillo, try to shut down Congress in 2022.

Peru's foreign minister, Hugo de Zela, says they're looking into the rules. They want to make sure they do the right thing. But they also want to send a message. Peru doesn't want other countries sticking their noses in their business.

Chavez says she's innocent. She's been in and out of jail since last year. Now, she's waiting to see if she can leave Peru for Mexico. If she does, it could make things even more complicated between the two countries.

But it's not all bad. Peru and Mexico still do a lot of business together. They're part of a trade group called the Pacific Alliance. Last year, they traded over $2. 5 billion worth of goods. So, even though they're not on speaking terms right now, they still have to work together.
