In a bold move, U. S. Customs and Border Patrol agents launched a new immigration enforcement operation in Charlotte, North Carolina. On the first day alone, they detained 81 individuals, many with criminal records. The operation, dubbed "Charlotte's Web, " kicked off on a Saturday morning near South Boulevard, close to Baleada Bar and Grill.

Commander Gregory K. Bovino, leading the effort, highlighted the significance of the arrests. He pointed out that many of those taken into custody had extensive criminal and immigration histories. Bovino shared updates on social media, emphasizing the importance of border security and the role of CBP in Charlotte.

The operation is notable because it marks the first time CBP has taken the lead in immigration enforcement in a city without coordinating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). While ICE has conducted similar operations in Charlotte before, this time, they were not involved.

Border Patrol agents were seen in various parts of the city, including South Boulevard, Central Avenue, and Albemarle Road. They operated near businesses and busy intersections, using vans and SUVs to make their arrests. The agency has not yet provided details on the nature or duration of the operation.

The arrival of Border Patrol agents in Charlotte has sparked significant opposition. Hundreds of residents gathered for a protest at First Ward Park in Uptown on Saturday afternoon. Speakers at the protest condemned the operations, expressing concerns about the fear they instill in the immigrant community. Protesters held signs in both English and Spanish, voicing their demands for the agents to leave.

Asha Patel, a community organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, shared her frustrations with local media. She emphasized the need for the Border Patrol to leave Charlotte immediately. Patel also mentioned that similar protests in Chicago had successfully pushed agents out, hoping for a similar outcome in Charlotte.

The operation has raised questions about the balance between enforcing immigration laws and respecting the rights of residents. While some support the crackdown on individuals with criminal histories, others argue that such operations create an atmosphere of fear and division.
