School leaders in New Jersey are making some serious cash. The latest numbers show that while most superintendents saw a small pay bump, a few are raking in over $300, 000 a year.

Norma Fernandez, who runs Jersey City Public Schools, tops the list with a salary of $322, 272. She's been with the district for over four decades and has been the superintendent for the past three years. Before that, she was a principal.

Five other superintendents also made at least $300, 000 last year. Another 17 earned $270, 000 or more. But the average salary for all superintendents in the state was $197, 444, which is only a 1. 95% increase from the previous year.

Most superintendents work full-time in one district, but some districts share a superintendent or have them take on extra roles. This is more common in smaller districts without high schools.

Compared to the national average, New Jersey superintendents are making a lot more. The national average salary for a superintendent is $131, 171.

The data also includes information about whether a superintendent holds multiple roles within the same district or works for more than one district.
