3‑D Driving Maps Get a Smart Upgrade
USAThu Mar 12 2026
Google has refreshed its map app so that when you drive, the screen shows a 3‑D view of your surroundings instead of a flat picture. The change is part of the company’s new “Gemini” AI lineup and is billed as the biggest update to navigation in ten years.
The 3‑D view adds depth to buildings and bridges, helping drivers spot landmarks more easily. Behind the scenes, Gemini models decide which details to show and which to hide so you’re not distracted. The system pulls from Street View and satellite images, then highlights key road signs like crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs.
Voice directions have also been tweaked. The app now speaks in a more natural tone, telling you things like “keep going past this exit and take the next one. ” This can be useful if you’re in a country with unfamiliar road names.
When the app offers an alternate route, it explains the trade‑offs: a longer trip might mean less traffic. Before you start driving, Maps can show a Street View preview of your destination and suggest parking spots.
A new feature called Ask Maps lets you chat with Gemini inside the app. Type a question in plain language and the AI pulls from all the map data to give you an answer. For example, you could ask for a place that offers phone charging and coffee, and the reply will be personalized to your past searches. You can then book a restaurant or save a location with a single tap.
The 3‑D navigation is rolling out first in the United States and will spread to Android, iOS, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars that already use Google’s system. Ask Maps is available on Android and iOS in the US and India, with desktop support coming soon.
