A Big Payout for Survivors in New York
New York, USASat May 02 2026
New York’s Catholic leadership has agreed to pay 800 million dollars to people who were abused by priests as kids. Over 1, 300 survivors will share this money, making it one of the biggest payouts ever in the U. S. for clergy abuse cases. Only Los Angeles gave more—880 million—when it settled similar lawsuits last year.
The deal comes after states changed their laws to let adults sue over old abuse cases. New York’s law passed in 2019 opened a window for survivors to come forward. Many other dioceses across the country have filed for bankruptcy instead of paying huge sums upfront. New York’s archdiocese avoided that route, though it still had to dig deep into its pockets.
As part of the agreement, the church will also hand over files about abusive priests. An attorney for the survivors called it a win after years of fighting, but added it’s not full justice—just a step toward accountability. The money won’t come from the church alone; insurers will also chip in, giving survivors more chances to seek payouts.
Behind the scenes, a retired judge helped both sides reach this deal. The church has admitted in the past that it failed to protect kids, calling the abuse a dark stain on its history. For many survivors, the money is less about fixing the past and more about seeing the church take responsibility at last.
