Alex Honnold, a famous American rock climber, did something amazing. He climbed the tall Taipei 101 building without any ropes or safety gear. This happened on a Sunday, and it took him about 90 minutes to reach the top. People on the ground cheered as he waved his arms in victory.
The building is super tall, about 508 meters or 1, 667 feet. Honnold used small L-shaped parts of the building as steps. He also had to climb around big decorations sticking out from the tower, using just his hands. The hardest part was the middle section, called the “bamboo boxes. ” This part has 64 floors with steep climbs and small balconies where he could rest.
Honnold is known for his ropeless climbs, like the one he did in Yosemite National Park. This time, his climb was shown live on Netflix with a small delay. It was supposed to happen on Saturday, but rain delayed it by a day.
Having so many people watching was different for Honnold. He usually climbs in quiet, remote places. “It was intense with so many people watching, ” he said. “But everyone was cheering for me. It made the experience feel more fun and festive. ”
People had mixed feelings about the climb. Some were excited, while others worried about the risks. Honnold isn’t the first to climb Taipei 101, but he is the first to do it without a rope. A French climber, Alain Robert, did it in 2004 when the building first opened.
