A Campus Under Fire: The Florida State Shooting
Florida, Tallahassee, USASat Apr 19 2025
In a shocking incident, a shooting at Florida State University left two people dead and six injured. The event unfolded near the student union, prompting an immediate lockdown. The lockdown was lifted a few hours later when authorities confirmed the threat was neutralized.
The suspect, a 20-year-old college student, was identified as Phoenix Ikner, son of a sheriff’s deputy. Ikner was shot and taken into custody. The deputy’s former service weapon was used in the shooting, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
Students and staff were in a state of panic. Some hid in a bowling alley, while others were led out of classrooms with their hands on their heads by armed police officers. The fear and uncertainty were palpable. One student, Josh Jontiff, recalled the moment when the classroom projector screens flashed an alert about an active shooter. The room went dark, and police banged on the door, leading them outside with guns drawn.
The community responded with solidarity. Students and staff began retrieving their belongings left behind in the chaos. A memorial near the student union saw a steady stream of visitors bringing flowers, balloons, and candles. The atmosphere was one of mourning and reflection.
The victims were not students. One was Robert Morales, a university dining coordinator who had worked at Florida State since 2015. The other was Tiru Chabba, a 45-year-old father of two from Greenville, South Carolina, who worked for a food service vendor. The injured were expected to make full recoveries, with most already upgraded to good condition.
The suspect’s background added another layer of intrigue. Ikner was a member of the sheriff’s office’s youth advisory council and had participated in various training programs. His mother, Deputy Jessica Ikner, was on duty at a nearby middle school during the shooting. She was reassigned to the property crimes unit and later took personal leave.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Authorities are investigating, but no official statement has been released. The university canceled classes through Friday, and athletic events were called off through Sunday. Governor Ron DeSantis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of the victims and to honor the bravery of first responders.
