A Candidate's Past Tattoo and Online Posts Spark Debate

Maine, USAWed Oct 22 2025

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, has faced scrutiny over a tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism and controversial Reddit posts from his past.

The Tattoo Controversy

Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, revealed that he got a skull and crossbones tattoo in 2007 while drunk. He claimed he was unaware of its extremist ties.

"I had no idea about its Nazi connections."

He discussed the tattoo on the podcast Pod Save America, admitting he had seen it in a decade-old video where he was dancing shirtless at his brother’s wedding. Platner emphasized that he is not a Nazi and has always opposed antisemitism and Nazism.

Addressing Past Reddit Posts

Platner also addressed controversial Reddit posts made between 2009 and 2021. These posts included comments about sexual assault in the military, police, and rural white Americans.

"I was horrified by some of my past words."

He explained that he was going through a tough time after his military service.

Reactions and Support

Jonathan Greenblatt, head of the Anti-Defamation League, criticized any connection to Nazi ideology in public figures. Platner stated he plans to remove the tattoo and that he never hid it, even during his Army enlistment physical.

Senator Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Platner, stood by his support. Platner believes people can grow and change over time.

"Everyone has posted something stupid online at some point."
