Dan Bongino, the FBI's deputy director, has decided to leave his post in January. He shared this news on X, thanking President Trump, Attorney General Bondi, and FBI Director Patel for the chance to serve. Bongino, a former podcaster and law enforcement officer, had been in the role since February.
President Trump hinted at Bongino's departure earlier in the day, mentioning that Bongino might return to his podcast. FBI Director Patel praised Bongino's work, stating that he had exceeded expectations and made the country safer.
Bongino's time at the FBI wasn't without controversy. He reportedly considered resigning in July after a memo was released regarding the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. The memo stated that no further charges would be filed, which upset some Trump supporters. Bongino had previously alleged a cover-up on his podcast.
Despite the controversy, Bongino stayed on and even made headlines for his work on the pipe bomb case from January 6, 2021. He vowed to track down the suspect, Brian Cole Jr. , who has pleaded not guilty. Bongino had initially claimed the pipe bomb was an "inside job" to stop Trump but later distanced himself from those remarks, stating that his current role is based on facts.
The FBI has not yet announced a replacement for Bongino. Meanwhile, the bureau has seen some changes, with Andrew Bailey joining as a co-deputy director in August.
