A man who met a woman through a dating app ended up causing a massive fire that destroyed over 330, 000 acres in the Bay Area. Victor Serriteno, 33, was found guilty of murder and arson. He was sentenced to 73 years to life in prison. Serriteno met Priscilla Castro, a 32-year-old mother, through a dating app in August 2020. Castro was last seen alive on the evening of August 16, 2020. She was a single mom to a 9-year-old girl. Castro's family became worried when she did not return from her date. Castro's phone was off and her social media accounts were inactive. Investigators used her cellphone records to find her car. It was abandoned in a rural area. That same day, a fire started nearby. This fire became known as the Markley fire. It killed two people, Douglas Mai, 82, and Leon "James" Bone, 64. Their homes were destroyed by the flames. The Markley Fire grew and merged with the LNU Lightning Complex Fire. This was one of the most destructive fires in California's history. It burned 330, 000 acres in the Bay Area. Two weeks later, officials found Castro's charred remains. An angel pendant found next to her remains helped identify her. Police ruled her death a homicide and started an investigation. Detectives focused on Serriteno, the last person to contact Castro before she died. He was arrested for Castro's death on September 11, 2020. Later, he was rearrested for the arson and deaths of Mai and Bone. Officials found that the fire started after Serriteno tried to dispose of Castro's body by burning it. Investigators could not determine how Serriteno killed Castro due to the state of her remains. Prosecutors said he murdered her in his home. The fire had a huge impact on the community.
