Sagaing, MyanmarWed Apr 02 2025
The earthquake in Myanmar was a disaster for many people. It was a tragedy that hit hard during the holy month of Ramadan. Many Muslims were praying in their mosques when the earthquake struck. Three mosques collapsed, killing hundreds. The biggest mosque, Myoma, was one of them. The loss was immense, with around 170 relatives, friends, and former congregation members of a former imam, Soe Nay Oo, losing their lives. Soe Nay Oo was in Thailand when the earthquake happened. He felt the quake in the border town of Mae Sot. He later found out about the massive loss of life in his former community. He was heartbroken to learn that many of his loved ones had perished. The news was devastating, especially since it happened during Ramadan, a time of reflection and community. The death toll was high, with over 2, 700 people losing their lives. The numbers were expected to rise as more bodies were recovered from the rubble. The earthquake hit near Sagaing and Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city. While the area is known for its ancient Buddhist temples, it also had a significant Muslim population. The mosques on Myoma Street were among the worst hit. Many houses on the street also collapsed, leaving hundreds homeless or afraid to return to their homes due to potential aftershocks. Food supplies were scarce, adding to the challenges faced by the survivors. Soe Nay Oo shared his grief over the loss of his loved ones. He mentioned that the death of his wife's cousin was particularly painful. She was known for her love and kindness within the family. Another cousin, a respected businessman who had performed the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, also died. Soe Nay Oo remembered him fondly as a brotherly figure who was always there to help. The loss of these individuals was deeply felt, and Soe Nay Oo struggled with the grief of losing so many people he cared about. The earthquake's impact was far-reaching, affecting not just the Muslim community but the entire region. The loss of life was tragic, and the survivors faced numerous challenges in the aftermath. The earthquake served as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community support during times of crisis. The memories of those lost will be cherished, and their contributions to the community will not be forgotten.
