A Doctor's Downfall: How a Leader's Greed Led to a $1. 5 Million Heist

Brooklyn, USAThu Aug 07 2025
A former high-ranking doctor at a Brooklyn hospital has been sentenced to up to three years in prison for stealing nearly $1. 5 million. Dr. Michael Lucchesi, who was the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, admitted to using the stolen funds for personal luxuries over a six-year period. Lucchesi's spending spree included extravagant pet care, with $176, 000 spent on his dog, including a $120, 000 bill at a high-end pet resort. He also spent $348, 000 on personal travel and $92, 000 on entertainment, such as sports events, concerts, and Broadway shows. Additionally, he used $109, 000 for gym memberships and personal training. The theft was carried out using a business credit card meant for hospital expenses. Lucchesi pleaded guilty to first-degree grand larceny in June and agreed to pay $720, 000 in restitution. The stolen money could have been used to support patient care and medical services at the hospital. During the sentencing, Lucchesi appeared disheveled and chose not to speak. His attorney emphasized his past contributions to the Brooklyn community. The Brooklyn District Attorney criticized Lucchesi for betraying the trust placed in him as a leader at a vital medical institution.
