A Drunk Cyclist\'s Outburst Leaves Two Candidates Shaken
Spokane, Washington, USAFri May 29 2026
Over Memorial Day weekend, two Spokane political hopefuls found themselves in an unexpected clash with a clearly intoxicated man while putting up campaign signs. Adrian Davis, 43, now faces serious charges after what started as a simple act of political campaigning turned into a violent confrontation. The incident, captured on video, shows Davis approaching Mike Volz and Dale Whitaker—both Republican candidates—while they worked near North Wall Street and West Cascade Way.
Whitaker, who was filming the process, later admitted he initially wanted to avoid involving police, hoping Davis would just walk away. But things escalated quickly. According to court records, Davis was visibly drunk, smelled of alcohol, and started yelling insults at the candidates. His rants included slurs and accusations about their political beliefs, even though their signs clearly identified them as Republicans.
The situation took a physical turn when Davis headbutted Volz and later Whitaker, despite their attempts to calm him down. Video evidence shows passersby stepping in to help, but Davis only grew more aggressive, repeatedly threatening to call the police—while also claiming he’d be waiting for them. His behavior suggests deep frustration, possibly fueled by alcohol and personal struggles.
Court documents reveal Davis has a history of legal trouble, including prior assault and burglary charges. His mental health and substance abuse issues also appear to play a role in the incident. The harassment charge against him is classified as a hate crime, partly because of his repeated use of homophobic slurs. Whitaker, who was also headbutted, later decided to press charges after deputies explained it might be the only way Davis gets the help he needs.
Both candidates now say the episode highlights bigger problems with public safety in Spokane. They argue that years of ineffective policies have left residents feeling unsafe, whether they’re just going about their day or trying to participate in democracy. The attack wasn’t just about politics—it was a reminder of how quickly tensions can spiral when people refuse to walk away.
