A Failed Assassination Plot Shakes the U. S.

Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, aged 46 and 41 respectively, were sentenced to 25 years in prison each. The court found Amirov and Omarov guilty of attempted murder, money laundering, and conspiracy. The sentences were less than the 55 years prosecutors sought but more than the 10 to 13 years the defense recommended. Prosecutors alleged that Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps paid the two men $500, 000 for the failed assassination attempt. Iran has denied any involvement, calling the allegations baseless. This case is part of a broader crackdown by the U. S. Justice Department on what it terms transnational repression. A third man, Khalid Mehdiyev, was also charged in the plot and pleaded guilty to attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Mehdiyev testified against Amirov and Omarov, revealing that he tried to kill Alinejad in coordination with the two men. He was arrested after being found staking out Alinejad's home with an AK-47 and a ski mask. The case raises serious questions about the reach of authoritarian governments and their attempts to silence dissenters, even on foreign soil.
