A Former Hitman Is Back in Trouble
Englishtown, NJ, USATue Jun 23 2026
John Alite, who once worked for a mafia family and later became a local councilman, has been taken into custody in New Jersey. The 63‑year‑old was arrested on Friday and released after a court appearance, but he must appear again for a detention hearing next week.
Alite’s lawyer said the case would not be discussed until the next court date, keeping the details close to the legal process.
Charges against him include extortion, corporate misconduct, loansharking and terroristic threats. Authorities say he lent money at very high rates and used violence to enforce repayment.
During the investigation, police found a collection of weapons at Alite’s home: metal knuckles, an expandable baton, six baseball bats and about twenty knives, some of which were switchblades. Two of the bats were kept near the front door and five others in a kitchen storage area, suggesting they were ready for use.
Court documents reveal that Alite threatened at least one borrower, warning he would hit him with a bat if the debt was not cleared. He also boasted about earlier attempts to “gut” people, indicating a history of intimidation.
Prosecutors claim that Alite’s company, Straightened‑Out Entertainment Inc. , was used as a front for illegal activities. The firm allegedly obtained property and money from victims through threats, echoing the violent tactics he described in a 2009 testimony during a trial involving John “Junior” Gotti.
In that earlier case, Alite admitted to killing a childhood friend to gain respect among mobsters. The new charges suggest he may have returned to that violent lifestyle after a period of public service.
