A Fresh Start for Oakland Coliseum’s Future
Oakland, USAFri May 29 2026
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors has taken the first big step toward selling the Oakland Coliseum to a group led by local businessman Ray Bobbitt. The deal, worth $115 million, aims to turn the 112-acre property into a new development hub in East Oakland. But while the agreement is a major move forward, some big questions—especially about cleanup costs and who’s responsible for them—still need answers before the sale can close on June 30.
For years, the Coliseum has struggled to stay relevant after losing its major sports teams. Now, the African American Sports and Entertainment Group wants to buy the entire complex, including the Oakland Arena, which still hosts big events. The group plans to pay in three yearly installments with interest, but the county will first have to pay $115 million to the Oakland Athletics—the team that previously bought the county’s half of the property. Meanwhile, the group is also working to buy the city’s share for $125 million in 2025.
One big sticking point? Environmental cleanup. The arena sits on land with possible groundwater pollution, and the new owners don’t want to be stuck with the bill if cleanup is needed. The county refused to include protections in the deal, meaning the group could face unexpected costs down the road. Supervisor Nate Miley admitted the deal isn’t perfect but called it a win because it ends a long legal battle and brings in more money for the county.
The arena itself could be a key part of the plan. Even though it’s still used for concerts and sports, it’s aging and needs updates to stay competitive with newer venues like San Francisco’s Chase Center. Bobbitt sees it as a cultural landmark with huge potential, but turning it into something modern won’t be cheap.
Supporters of the deal say it’s a rare chance to give East Oakland a fresh start. After nearly a decade of delays, the African American Sports and Entertainment Group is finally making progress—but the real test comes when the money changes hands and cleanup work begins.
