The Inflation Reduction Act is making waves in the healthcare industry as it takes on the issue of escalating prescription drug prices, bringing relief and fairness to countless Americans. At the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, the vision of a healthcare system where no one has to abandon essential medications due to financial hurdles is becoming a reality.
The new law has imposed a monthly insulin cost ceiling of $35 for Medicare beneficiaries, making recommended vaccines such as shingles, RSV, and Tdap free for people with Medicare. This year, the pockets of 1. 1 million Texans with Medicare Part D have been lightened with over $258 million in estimated savings. By 2024, the drug cost cap for everyone with Medicare prescription drug coverage will be set at $2,000.
Moreover, the groundbreaking move to negotiate Medicare drug prices for the first time has culminated in reduced prices for 10 drugs, including high-stakes, lifesaving medicines like Eliquis and Januvia. This step is projected to save Medicare $6 billion in 2023 alone, with more drugs to be selected for negotiation annually. This opens the door for more seniors and people with disabilities with Medicare to benefit from lower drug prices, saving taxpayers even more money.
