A Generous Gift to Fight Cancer

The Knight family has made a huge donation to fight cancer. They gave $2 billion to the Oregon Health & Science University's Knight Cancer Institute. This is a lot of money. It is more than double the second-biggest donation this year. Warren Buffett gave $746. 7 million to his foundation. That is a lot less than what the Knights gave. This $2 billion gift is the biggest ever given to a university. It is even more than the $1. 8 billion Michael Bloomberg gave to Johns Hopkins in 2018. The Knights have given many big gifts before. They gave $500 million to OHSU, $500 million to the University of Oregon, and $400 million to Stanford University.Phil Knight started Nike. He went to the University of Oregon and Stanford. He and his wife Penny Knight made these big donations together. In 1997, Phil Knight started the Knight Foundation. This foundation gives money to different causes. Last year, it gave $226 million. Some of this money went to smaller charities in Oregon. The Knight Foundation has $5. 4 billion in assets. This is a lot of money. The Chronicle of Philanthropy will release its annual ranking of philanthropists in March. This ranking will show who gave the most money this year.
