In a significant development, Israel has received what could be the remains of one of the last hostages held in Gaza. This comes as a ray of hope amid the ongoing conflict, but the situation remains complex. The remains, found by militants in northern Gaza, are now in Israel for forensic examination. Earlier, remains handed over did not match the last two known hostages, an Israeli and a Thai national.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered with U. S. support, includes the return of all hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the war. In return, Israel has been releasing Palestinian prisoners. The agreement also outlines the opening of the Rafah crossing for medical evacuations and travel. However, this plan is facing hurdles due to a dispute between Israel and Egypt.
Israel insists that Palestinians will not be able to return to Gaza through Rafah until the last hostage remains are returned. Egypt, on the other hand, wants the crossing to be open for movement in both directions. The World Health Organization reports that over 16, 500 sick and wounded people in Gaza need urgent medical care outside the territory.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that forensic testing confirmed the remains returned earlier did not match the last two hostages. These hostages are Ran Gvili, an Israeli police officer who helped others escape before being killed, and Sudthisak Rinthalak, a Thai agricultural worker. The Thai Foreign Ministry has reported that 46 Thai nationals have been killed during the war, in addition to the hostages.
The opening of the Rafah crossing is further complicated by political tensions. Egypt fears that Palestinians leaving Gaza might not be able to return, citing concerns that Israel could use this as a way to permanently expel people. The crossing was sealed off in May 2024 when Israel's military invaded the area, but it was briefly opened in February for medical evacuations.
In a separate development, Israel and Lebanon are set to hold talks aimed at improving relations and economic cooperation. This marks a significant step, given the long-standing state of war between the two countries. The talks will include representatives from the U. S. , France, and the U. N. peacekeeping force UNIFIL.
Amid these developments, a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli fire in Gaza City's eastern Zeitoun neighborhood. The hospital reported that the man was shot in a "safe zone, " which, under the ceasefire terms, is not controlled by the Israeli military. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported over 360 Palestinian fatalities since the ceasefire took effect, with a total death toll exceeding 70, 100.
The ceasefire agreement aims to bring an end to the war that began with a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which resulted in about 1, 200 deaths and 251 hostages taken. The agreement includes the return of hostage remains and the release of Palestinian prisoners, but the process is fraught with challenges and accusations from both sides.
