A Groundbreaking Moment: Becky Hammon Makes NBA History
USATue Dec 31 2024
In the world of sports, history was made on November 22, 2020. Becky Hammon, an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, stepped into the limelight when she became the first female to coach an NBA game. This remarkable event happened after the Spurs' head coach, Gregg Popovich, was ejected during a game against the LA Lakers, which the Spurs lost 121-107.
But today isn't just about one coach. Let's look back at some other significant moments in sports history. In 1956, the New York Giants dominated the NFL by crushing the Chicago Bears 47-7 to clinch the title. Two years later, the Green Bay Packers proved their dominance by winning the NFL title for the second consecutive year, beating the New York Giants 16-7.
Fast forward to 1973, and the Minnesota Vikings were on top of their game, beating the Dallas Cowboys 27-10 to win the NFC championship. That same year, the Miami Dolphins made history by winning an unprecedented third straight AFC title with a 27-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders.
Sports records were shattered in 1981 when Wayne Gretzky, of the Edmonton Oilers, scored five goals in a single game against the Philadelphia Flyers. This included his 50th goal of the season, which he scored into an empty net. Talk about a game-changer!
In 1990, Orlando Magic point guard Scott Skiles set a new NBA record with 30 assists in a single game, leading his team to a 155-116 victory against the Denver Nuggets.
Years later, in 2007, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints broke the NFL record for completions in a season, with a total of 443. He achieved this despite his team losing 33-25 to the Chicago Bears.
Not all records are positive. In 2008, the Denver Broncos fired their head coach, Mike Shanahan. But good things come to those who wait. In 2010, the Stanford Cardinal women's basketball team ended the Connecticut Huskies' 90-game winning streak, proving that no team is unbeatable.
In 2016, Isaiah Thomas of the Boston Celtics scored 29 points in the fourth quarter of a game against the Miami Heat, setting a new club record for most points scored in a single period. Talk about a comeback!
The year 2017 saw the Wisconsin Badgers cap off their best season with a 34-24 win over Miami in the Orange Bowl. Freshman sensation Jonathan Taylor broke the FBS freshman record for most rushing yards in a season, finishing with an impressive 1, 977 yards.
Finally, in 2018, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs became only the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 5, 000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a single season. He achieved both milestones in the third quarter of a game against the Oakland Raiders.
Each of these moments is a testament to the incredible achievements and records that make sports so exciting.
