A Journey Begins

Her journey began with simple walks along the cliffs of Upper Newport Bay, where she and her children would observe the local birds. These outings sparked a deep appreciation for the wildlife and the need to protect their habitat.

Pizzo's concern for the Back Bay grew as she witnessed the potential threats posed by urban development. In the 1960s, plans to expand the 55 Freeway and transform the area into a commercial marina could have destroyed the estuary. Pizzo joined a grassroots group called the Freeway Fighters, which successfully opposed the expansion. This experience inspired her to write children's books that would educate and inspire future generations about the importance of preserving the environment.

Educating Through Storytelling

Her books, "Little Crumb: Tales of the Back Bay", "Amy Avocet, the Back Bay Ballerina", "Pelican Bill: The Fisherman", and "The Tale of the Bay Ducklings", brought the wildlife of the estuary to life. Pizzo toured schools along the California coast, reading her books and planting seeds of compassion for the natural world. Her efforts have had a lasting impact, inspiring many to become environmentalists.

A Lasting Legacy

Despite her health challenges, Pizzo continues to share her passion and wisdom. Recently, she was honored as the "Back Bay Book Queen" at a gathering at the Heavenly Home hospice care facility. Her books, though out of print, remain cherished by many. The Newport Bay Conservancy is exploring ways to republish her work, ensuring that her legacy continues to inspire future generations.
