Charles Shay, a brave Native American veteran, recently passed away at his home in France. He was 101 years old. Shay, a member of the Penobscot tribe from Maine, is remembered for his heroic actions on D-Day, where he saved many lives as a medic. He received the Silver Star for his bravery and France's highest honor, the Legion of Honor, in 2007.
Shay had been living in France since 2018, close to the Normandy beaches where he once fought. His passing has left a deep void, but his legacy of courage and service continues to inspire. The Charles Shay Memorial group honored him, stating that he was a loving family man, a hero, and an amazing human being.
On D-Day, Shay witnessed immense loss and destruction. He recalled falling asleep in a grove surrounded by the dead. Despite the horrors, he continued his mission, rescuing the wounded. After the war, he reenlisted due to the challenging conditions faced by Native Americans in Maine.
Shay's life was marked by service and resilience. He fought in the Korean War, participated in nuclear testing, and worked at the International Atomic Energy Agency. For over 60 years, he remained silent about his WWII experiences. However, he began sharing his story in 2007, spreading a message of peace.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shay stood alone at commemoration ceremonies, honoring the fallen when others could not attend. He performed a sage-burning ceremony on a bluff overlooking Omaha Beach, paying tribute to those who died. In 2022, he passed on this tradition to Julia Kelly, another Native American veteran.
Shay expressed sadness at the return of war to Europe, reflecting on the futility of conflict. His life's work was a testament to the enduring hope for peace. Though he is gone, his legacy lives on, reminding us of the importance of courage, service, and the pursuit of a peaceful world.
