A Life Changed by Chaos
Minnesota, Minneapolis, USASun May 25 2025
The neighborhood of Minneapolis will never be the same after the tragic death of George Floyd. This event shook the community to its core and left lasting impacts on many lives, including that of Andrea Jenkins. She was the first Black, openly transgender woman to hold public office in the United States. Jenkins had been elected in 2018, just a year after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Jenkins was deeply involved in her community. She walked the streets, shopped at local stores, and greeted her neighbors. Her dedication to her neighborhood was unwavering, even with her health challenges. Her life took a dramatic turn on May 25, 2020. The president of the city council was away, leaving Jenkins, as vice president, to step into a leadership role during the crisis.
The protests that followed Floyd's death were intense. Jenkins found herself in the middle of it all, taking calls every two hours throughout the night. These calls were with various agencies, including the FBI and the Minnesota State Patrol. The chaos was overwhelming. Helicopters flew overhead, gunshots echoed through the night, and ambulances, rerouted due to construction, added to the noise.
The stress and chaos of those nights took a toll on Jenkins' health. She developed PTSD, which disrupted her sleep patterns. Even years later, she struggles to sleep through the night. Her multiple sclerosis, already a challenge, worsened due to the added stress. Jenkins now relies on a motorized scooter to get around, a change from her previous mobility.
The neighborhood was forever altered by the events of that day. The noise, the fear, and the constant reminders of the tragedy have left deep scars. Jenkins' experience highlights the broader impact of such events on individuals and communities. It's a stark reminder of how quickly life can change and the lasting effects of trauma.
The community's resilience is tested, but so is its ability to heal. Jenkins' story is one of strength and endurance, but it also serves as a cautionary tale. The events of May 25, 2020, will forever be a part of the neighborhood's history, shaping its future in ways that are still unfolding.
