Eva Schloss, a Holocaust survivor and stepsister of Anne Frank, has passed away at the age of 96 in London. Her family fondly remembers her as an extraordinary woman, a survivor of Auschwitz, and a dedicated educator who worked tirelessly for peace and remembrance.
Born in Vienna in 1929, Eva fled to Amsterdam with her family to escape the Nazis. There, she met Anne Frank, another Jewish girl her age. Both families went into hiding to avoid capture, but were eventually betrayed and sent to Auschwitz. Eva and her mother survived the horrors of the camp, including the inhumane conditions and the loss of loved ones. Her father and brother did not make it out alive.
After the war, Eva moved to Britain, where she married Zvi Schloss, a German Jewish refugee. In 1953, her mother married Otto Frank, Anne's father, making Eva and Anne stepsisters. Eva did not speak publicly about her experiences for many years, but after addressing an Anne Frank exhibition in 1986, she made it her mission to educate others about the Holocaust.
Eva spoke in schools, prisons, and international conferences, sharing her story in books and other resources. She traveled to California in 2019 to meet with teenagers who had made Nazi salutes at a party, emphasizing the importance of remembering history. She also campaigned for Facebook to remove Holocaust-denying material.
Eva's work left a lasting impact, inspiring many to challenge prejudice and promote understanding. Britain's King Charles III expressed his admiration for her resilience and dedication to overcoming hatred. Eva is survived by her three daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
