A Local Seafood Spot Closes After 46 Years

Dana Point Harbor, USASun May 03 2026
For over four decades, a small but beloved seafood spot in Dana Point Harbor served up fresh catches and classic meals. Now, Jon’s Fish Market will close its doors on May 3 after owner Shala Mansur O’Keefe decided the daily grind of running a business had become too much. Health struggles and financial pressures pushed her to step away, even though it meant losing a place that felt like a second home to many. The market started in 1980 when fisherman Jon Mansur and his wife Sharon wanted to bring local seafood straight to diners. Before that, the spot was a struggling restaurant called The Lobster Trap. The Mansur family turned it into something bigger, adding a dining room and even hosting Tahitian music nights that made it a hotspot. Their fresh fish sandwiches and fish and chips became staples for locals and visitors alike. O’Keefe took over in 2018, bringing her own experience as a boat captain and commercial fisher. She kept the business running as a family operation, even after her father passed. Her brother, who once ran the shop, stepped back in 2023, letting her shape the future of the place.
Like many small restaurants, Jon’s Fish Market faced tough times. Rising costs, pandemic shutdowns, and changes in how people eat out made it harder to stay afloat. The owners tried adding drinks and selling goods at a local farmers market, but it wasn’t enough to keep the doors open. The harbor’s redevelopment might also have played a role. Several other restaurants in the area have closed lately, including The Brig, Harpoon Henry’s, and Gemmell’s. While the harbor’s managers called Jon’s a key part of the community, they admitted they didn’t see a way to keep it going as the area changes. For years, this spot was more than just a restaurant—it was a connection to Dana Point’s fishing roots. The people who worked there knew where the food came from, and that made the meals taste even better. Now, with its last day on May 3, the market leaves behind a legacy of fresh seafood and a reminder of how hard small businesses can struggle in today’s world.
