A local teacher gets special recognition for going the extra mile

A McHenry high school teacher recently joined nearly 450 other educators from Illinois who received awards for their outstanding contributions. Kathryn Larson, who teaches social studies, earned the Meritorious Service award specifically for her early-career achievements. The Illinois State Board of Education organized this yearly event to highlight teachers, staff, and volunteers who make Illinois schools better places for students.
This year marked the 52nd time the ceremony took place. A video message from the governor and speeches from past winners added to the celebration. The event also honored last year’s Teacher of the Year from the Far North suburbs, who went on to compete for the statewide title. Larson, now in her third year of teaching, appreciated the chance to meet other educators who share her dedication to student success. She mentioned how inspiring it was to exchange ideas about creating effective classrooms.
Larson’s teaching schedule last year included advanced placement classes like Government, Revolutions Throughout History, and Psychology. These courses give high school students a chance to study tougher material and earn college credit. Outside the classroom, Larson holds a degree in history education from Illinois State University, rounding out her knowledge with extra studies in political science, sociology, and psychology.
