A Look at Jimmy Carter's Legacy After His Death

Plains, USAThu Jan 09 2025
Former President Jimmy Carter, who held office from 1977 to 1981, is lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda ahead of his funeral. He faced numerous challenges during his presidency, including economic problems and international crises. Despite losing his reelection bid to Ronald Reagan, he gained a new appreciation from historians later on. Carter, a Georgia Democrat and the 39th U. S. president, passed away at the age of 100 on December 29. His body arrived in Washington on Tuesday, part of the state funeral rituals. At the Capitol, speakers from both political parties remembered Carter for his strong religious faith, his lengthy public service, and his decades of humanitarian work. Carter will stay at the Capitol until Thursday morning. Then, he will be moved to Washington National Cathedral for a state funeral. President Joe Biden, who has been a long-time ally of Carter, will deliver a eulogy. Other former presidents, including Donald Trump, are expected to attend. Following the funeral, a Boeing 747, which is known as Air Force One when carrying a sitting president, will transport Carter and his family back to Georgia. A private funeral will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, where Carter taught Sunday School after leaving office. Carter will be laid to rest next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, at the home they built before his political career kicked off. They lived there except for the years spent in the Georgia Governor's Mansion and the White House.
