A New Asteroid on the Radar: Should We Worry?

Sat Feb 08 2025
Did you hear about the new asteroid that astronomers just found? Hard to believe, but it’s named 2023 YR4. Okay, to keep it real, asteroid with a 2. 2% chance of hitting Earth on December 22, 2032. This number just popped up because of new observations. So, how did this happen? As we get more details about the space rock, it leads to changes in how we think about its future trajectory. This is like when you’re driving and suddenly hit a bump; your path changes. Scientists think, based on patterns, the odds might rise and then settle down again. Don't forget Apophis? It was once seen as a major threat but it was shown it would pass by Earth. This happens all the time. A lot of the info about this asteroid will get better once they have more observations. Researchers are using big telescopes to find out when and if this asteroid will hit Earth. Since it was first spotted on December 27, it’s already become an important case study for NASA andother agencies. The Apollo 2024 YR4 measures between 131 and 295 feet. That’s about the size of a large building. Up in space, there are all sizes of asteroids. Imagine what could happen if it hit Earth. 2008, a 30-meter-wide (98-foot-wide) asteroid struck the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia, flattening forests across 830 square miles (2, 150 square kilometers). The asteroid, which travelers noted on February 15, 2021. Let's talk about what will be done to keep us safe. Two groups backed by the UN will share the info and figure out how to stop the asteroid. We've seen this before in the past with the Tunguska event and more. Mitigation, like deflecting the asteroid, could be an option. But the main thing is to keep watching and collecting data. More data means less chance of an impact. So yeah, right now, scientists are not all that worried about 2024 YR4. The plan is to keep a close eye on the space rock. Let's hope new tech andmore research willreduce any chances to improve the data.
