A New Chance for a Cornerback to Shine
Philadelphia, PA, USAMon Mar 30 2026
The Philadelphia Eagles recently added former Seattle cornerback Tariq Woolen to their roster, signing him for a one‑year deal worth $15 million with $12 million guaranteed. This move could prove to be a turning point for Woolen or it might not pay off at all.
Woolen was viewed as one of the top young defensive backs entering free agency, yet he ended up with a short‑term contract while other players secured longer deals. His size and speed make him an attractive option, but teams have been hesitant because of his inconsistent play.
Throughout his career, Woolen has struggled with penalties, missed tackles and mental errors. Seattle used him sparingly in 2023 and 2024 as a result of mistakes, and even though he improved in 2025, he still committed significant errors, drawing many penalties and missing tackles according to Pro Football Focus.
One notable example of his highs and lows came during Seattle’s NFC Championship win over Los Angeles. Woolen stopped a pass on third‑and‑12, but a taunting penalty gave the Rams a first down and ultimately a touchdown that almost erased Seattle’s lead. The Eagles believe Woolen can turn such moments into positives with the right coaching and environment.
General Manager Howie Roseman sees Woolen as a “supremely talented player” who simply needs consistency to reach his full potential. If Philadelphia can harness those strengths, the team’s defense could become a force next season, and Woolen may earn a bigger contract elsewhere afterward.
The decision to sign Woolen was guided by the Eagles’ assessment that they can help him grow while keeping costs reasonable. If this gamble pays off, it could benefit both the player and the franchise.
