SK hynix has just wrapped up a massive deal with Intel. They've paid $8. 85 billion to take over Intel's NAND flash memory business. This isn't a small move. It's a game-changer in the tech world.
The journey started a few years back. In 2020, SK hynix began buying pieces of Intel's NAND business. The first big step happened in late 2021. SK hynix spent $6. 61 billion to get Intel's SSD business and a factory in China. They also got a new company called Solidigm, which is all about enterprise SSDs.
But there was a catch. Intel kept some key parts of the business, like the technology and the smart people working on it. This made it hard for Solidigm to work closely with SK hynix. It was like having a team but not being able to use all their skills.
Now, with the final payment of $1. 9 billion, SK hynix has it all. They've got the technology, the research, and the people. This means Solidigm can finally work hand-in-hand with SK hynix. Together, they can create the next big thing in storage.
For Intel, this deal is about changing direction. They're moving away from the crowded NAND market. Instead, they're focusing on hot new areas like AI chips. It's a smart move, given that NAND prices have been falling and profits have been shrinking.
SK hynix, on the other hand, is becoming a major player in the NAND market. They're now one of the biggest names in the game. But they've got some work to do. SK hynix and Solidigm use different technologies. In the short term, they'll need to keep both running. But eventually, they'll want to find a way to combine them for smoother operations.
This deal also means the end of a special agreement. Intel was making NAND wafers at SK hynix's factory in China. Now, both companies are free to follow their own paths. It's a clean break, and it's time for both to move forward.
