A New Spin on an Old Story
ArgentinaMon Mar 24 2025
The buzz is building around a new movie adaptation of the classic story, Kiss of the Spider Woman. This time, it's hitting the big screen with a fresh take, directed by Bill Condon and starring Jennifer Lopez. The film, which premiered at Sundance, has already sparked a lot of chatter in the industry.
The story revolves around two inmates, Valentín and Luis, sharing a cell in an Argentinian prison back in 1983. Luis, a gay widow, keeps Valentín's spirits up by weaving tales about his favorite actress, Ingrid Luna, played by Lopez, and her movie musicals. This role marks a significant leap for Tonatiuh, who is best known for his work on the Starz series Vida. Critics have been singing his praises, noting his impressive range and emotional depth.
The film is based on the book by Terrence McNally and features songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb. It's a production by Artists Equity, with a budget in the low-$30s million range. The foreign sales were handled by Stuart Ford’s AGC at the European Film Market, while WME and CAA Media Finance managed the U. S. rights.
Lopez and Condon have been instrumental in bringing this project to life. For Lopez, this is her first major role in a Broadway musical movie, and it's a significant step after her critically acclaimed performance in Hustlers. The film has already garnered an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating strong critical acclaim.
The production team behind Kiss of the Spider Woman includes Barry Josephson, Tom Kirdahy, Greg Yolen, and Vindhya Sagar. Additionally, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity, Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions, and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas are also involved as executive producers.
The original story has a rich history, starting as a 1976 novel by Manuel Puig, followed by a 1985 film directed by Hector Babenco, which won an Oscar for William Hurt. The Broadway musical, which premiered in 1993, won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. This new adaptation aims to capture the essence of the original story while adding a modern twist.
The film's distribution rights are being finalized with Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and LD Entertainment. Roadside Attractions has a track record of successfully launching films, as seen with Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, which garnered multiple award nominations and launched Pamela Anderson into new roles.
