This month, Earth will have a new temporary companion - a bus-size asteroid called 2024 PT5. This celestial visitor will become a "mini-moon" for a brief period, drawing attention from astronomers and space enthusiasts. The asteroid, discovered on August 7, will be captured by Earth's gravitational pull from September 29 to November 25, making it a rare and exciting occurrence.
The asteroid's journey is not a new phenomenon. In fact, asteroids like 2024 PT5 regularly pass by Earth, but this one is special because it will become a temporary satellite. According to Carlos de la Fuente Marcos, the lead author of the study, the asteroid will travel in a horseshoe pattern and will likely not fully circumnavigate the Earth. Imagine a cosmic "window shopper" - a small, dim object that is too small to be seen by amateur telescopes, but bright enough for professional astronomers to observe. The asteroid's visit is not a permanent arrangement, however. After its brief stay, it will return to its home in the Arjuna asteroid belt, a mass of small asteroids that follow Earth-like orbits. In other words, Asteroid 2024 won't be sticking around for nearly as long as our main moon, which has been circling the Earth for a staggering 4. 5 billion years.
