A Night of Local Legends and Big Wins
Orange County, CA, USASat Jun 20 2026
At the Angel Stadium’s Diamond Club Lounge, the OC Sports Awards lit up with hometown heroes and national stars. The night began with a heartfelt moment as Ann Meyers Drysdale—now 71 and a longtime broadcaster—was welcomed by her close friend Cheryl Miller, the former Trojan legend. Drysdale’s Legacy Award was a nod to her long career and to her brother Dave, who had recently been inducted into the National Polish‑American Sports Hall of Fame. The pair’s friendship crossed UCLA and USC lines, showing that sports pride can unite rivals.
The ceremony also honored Newport Beach’s own Leigh Steinberg with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The 77‑year‑old agent, who has handled contracts worth more than $4 billion and represented 12 Hall of Famers, spoke about the importance of family ties and giving back. He highlighted how athletes can influence society, citing a PSA from Lennox Lewis that aimed to change teenage behavior.
Five‑time Olympic gold medalist Aaron Peirsol, a 42‑year‑old backstroke icon from Newport Harbor High, received the Icon Award. Peirsol, who now lives in Hawaii and champions ocean protection, shared that he still holds the 200‑meter backstroke record set in 2009. He expressed pride in his legacy while hoping future swimmers will break his time.
Other recognitions included Coach of the Year for Natalie Nakase, who led the Golden State Valkyries to success and credited her entire team. High school athletes Makena Cook and Acen Jimenez earned top honors, while UC Irvine’s Hunter Hernandez and Kyle Evans were named college athletes of the year. Ashlyn Gwynn, a rising star in Cal State Fullerton soccer, also received applause.
The event celebrated both historic achievements and the ongoing influence of Orange County’s sports community, proving that local talent can shine on a national stage.
