A Nurse's Misstep: The Oxycodone Dilemma
Boston, USAWed Jul 23 2025
A licensed practical nurse from Yarmouth, Kaitlin Tipton, found herself in legal trouble after being accused of stealing oxycodone from the East Boston health care facility where she worked. The incident, which took place between November 2023 and February 2024, involved Tipton allegedly diverting over 50 pills by manipulating medical records.
The 34-year-old nurse was charged with drug larceny and fraudulently obtaining drugs. She was released on her own recognizance but was ordered to stay away from Advocate Health Care, the rehabilitation facility where the incident occurred. Tipton's next court appearance is scheduled for September 10.
Prosecutors allege that Tipton falsified drug records, took more medication than prescribed, and even made false entries on days she wasn't working. When questioned by police, she claimed she was getting the pills for a friend with back problems but couldn't recall how many times she had stolen the medication.
This case highlights a significant issue in the healthcare system: the diversion of prescription drugs. Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden pointed out that substances like oxycodone and oxycontin are major contributors to dependency issues in Boston and beyond. The final destination of these stolen pills remains unknown, but the impact of such actions is far-reaching.
The legal representative for Tipton declined to comment on the case. The court will ultimately decide the outcome, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the healthcare system and the potential for abuse.
