A Quick Guide to Michigan’s Lake Temperatures This Summer
Michigan, USAFri Jun 05 2026
Michigan’s lakes heat up at different speeds in early summer. While the big lakes like Superior stay chilly, some spots are already warm enough for a quick dip. Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron and parts of Lake Erie are pushing close to 70 degrees, making them feel almost bath-like compared to other areas. A few inland lakes like Houghton and Otsego are also hitting the mid-60s, giving swimmers a warmer alternative.
Most of the Great Lakes are still too cold for comfort. Lake Superior, the deepest and coldest, barely cracks 50 degrees near the shore. Even Lake Michigan, which usually warms up faster, stays in the 50s in many spots. The National Weather Service warns that swimming in water below 60 degrees can shock your system, raising heart rates and causing panic. Prolonged exposure can lead to muscle failure and hypothermia, turning a fun day into a dangerous situation.
Lake Erie stands out as the warmest right now, especially near Monroe and Gibraltar, where readings hit the high 60s. But don’t expect it to stay this way—by August, all the lakes will peak, with Erie likely topping 75 degrees. Meanwhile, inland lakes like Torch and Higgins are already in the mid-60s, offering a cozy escape from the colder Great Lakes. Still, swimmers should check local forecasts before jumping in, especially since storms can make even warm spots risky.
