A Racing Tragedy at Nurburgring

Nürburgring, GermanySun Apr 19 2026
Juha Miettinen, a seasoned endurance racer, lost his life in a collision that involved seven cars during a four‑hour race on the Nurburgring Nordschleife track in Germany. The accident happened just 25 minutes into the event, near the Karussell section, and the race was stopped immediately for rescue efforts. Emergency teams arrived quickly but could not revive Miettinen after he was removed from his vehicle; he died at the medical centre. Six other drivers were taken to local hospitals for precautionary checks, but none suffered serious injuries. The incident is the first fatality on this circuit in over a decade, since 2013.
Although not competing that weekend, Max Verstappen—known for his Formula One success—shared his shock and condolences on social media. He noted that motorsport is a passion for many, yet it carries inherent risks. A minute of silence will be observed before the next race on Sunday to honour Miettinen. Before the weekend, Miettinen and his co‑driver posted a short video expressing excitement for the upcoming races. Fans flooded the comments with tributes, wishing him peace.
