Last summer, something incredible happened near Joe Velaidum's home in Marshfield, Canada. While out for a walk with his dogs, a tiny delay saved him from a close encounter with a meteorite. He had stopped to move a dog leash, which was unusual. Little did he know, a space rock was headed his way. Thankfully, he was back inside when the meteorite struck, leaving dark debris on the ground. Intrigued, he checked his door camera. To his amazement, he saw the meteorite falling and striking the ground.
Velaidum's partner, Laura, suggested it might be a meteorite. Acting quickly, he collected some samples and sent them to Chris Herd, a meteorite expert from the University of Alberta. Herd confirmed they were chondrite, rocks from the Solar System's birth. This event is extraordinary because it's likely the first time a meteorite impact has been caught on video and audio. Herd noted that the meteorite, traveling at over 60, 000 kilometers per hour, slowed to about 200 kilometers per hour before hitting the ground. Velaidum was lucky to have moved away just in time. This rare event adds a new dimension to studying meteorites.
