Rep. Don Bacon, a Nebraska Republican known for his moderate stance, has decided not to run for re-election next year. At 61, he's had enough of the grueling two-year election cycles. Bacon, a former Air Force officer, has represented a swing district that includes Omaha and rural areas since 2016. He's been one of the few Republicans willing to criticize former President Donald Trump, despite the risks.
Bacon's decision comes after a tough re-election battle in 2024, where he narrowly won his seat. He admitted that the constant campaigning and long hours away from home have taken a toll on him and his family. With eight grandkids nearby, he's looking forward to spending more time at home.
Bacon hasn't ruled out future political runs, though. He's expressed interest in executive roles, such as Nebraska governor or even president in 2028. However, he's realistic about the challenges. Running for the White House as a House member is rare, and his brand of Republicanism, which combines Reagan-era policies with a strong foreign policy stance, may not be popular in today's GOP.
Bacon also discussed his vote for Trump's recent domestic policy package, which included Medicaid cuts. He acknowledged concerns about the impact on his district but ultimately voted for it, citing the need to extend Trump's tax cuts and increase military and border funding. He defended his vote, arguing that the bill also included funding for rural hospitals.
On the international stage, Bacon criticized the pause in sending weapons to Ukraine, calling for those responsible to be fired. He's been a vocal critic of Trump's handling of the Russian invasion and his perceived appeasement of Putin.
Bacon's retirement is notable, coming just a day after another Trump-critical Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis, announced he wouldn't seek re-election in 2026. Both lawmakers have faced threats and public feuds with Trump, but Bacon insists these factors didn't influence his decision.
