A Rough Day in Reading

Reading, Pennsylvania, USAWed Jun 03 2026
Reading has long been a hometown for many, but lately the city feels more troubled than hopeful. The mayor’s office claims to be tackling issues, yet everyday life shows the opposite trend. People still see homeless individuals on church steps almost every day, a sight that feels unsafe in a place where gun incidents are rising. A recent shooting at a local basketball event has moved violence closer to residents’ homes, no longer confined to the city’s outskirts.
Noise problems also grow worse. Cars honk, loud music blares, and fireworks that should stop after ten p. m. keep erupting into the night. These “machine‑gun” displays are loud enough to disturb neighbors, showing a lack of enforcement on the promised noise ordinance. While the mayor’s workload is heavy, the city still struggles with many of the same problems that existed before his term. Citizens ask for clearer action and better enforcement to bring peace back to Reading. The local community remains hopeful that leadership can change the direction of the city for good.
