A Secret Service Shootout Near the White House Ends With a Teen Shot
Washington, D.C., USATue May 05 2026
When President Trump spoke at a small‑business summit, the area around the White House briefly went on lockdown after shots were heard. Journalists were moved from the North Lawn into a secure press room while Secret Service agents responded to gunfire at 15th and Independence.
The exchange began when an armed man stepped out of a nearby building, pointed his weapon at the agents and fired. A uniformed Secret Service officer returned fire and hit the suspect, who was later identified as a juvenile. The teen suffered injuries that were not life‑threatening.
Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn held a short press briefing. He said the agents had spotted the threat because their surveillance teams were looking for “visual prints” of firearms. When the suspect fled, he drew a gun and shot toward the agents; they fired back.
Quinn declined to say whether the attacker was aiming at President Trump. He emphasized that agents patrol the area 24/7, and every incident is investigated to determine intent.
Emergency crews are still on the scene. The Secret Service urged people to stay away from 15th Street and Independence Avenue while investigators work.
