A Shining Beacon of Holiday Cheer and Hope

On a rainy Sunday, a vibrant crowd gathered to celebrate the launch of a beloved holiday tradition on Staten Island. The DiMartino family's home on Sharrotts Road was transformed into a dazzling Christmas village, featuring Victorian displays, a bustling bakery, a lively dance hall, a whimsical carousel, and dancing marionettes. The scene was complete with Santa's workshop, elves, snowmen, reindeer, and an array of festive props. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the DiMartinos' spectacular display, which has grown significantly since its humble beginnings. In the first year, they raised $1, 600 for pediatric cancer patients at Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital. Last year, they shattered records with $82, 620 in donations. Joseph DiMartino aims to raise $90, 000 this year, with a generous $500 contribution from the Italian Club of Staten Island Foundation. The display now includes interactive elements, such as photo booths and animated bears, along with thousands of colorful lights and new trees. The grand opening featured live performances by local artists and school groups, hosted by popular radio personalities Joe Causi and Vinnie Medugno. Medugno, known as "Mr. Christmas, " emphasized the event's spiritual significance, highlighting the community's support for children battling pediatric cancer. The DiMartinos' home was bustling with activity, from live performances to the Camp S’mores truck offering treats. The NYPD’s 123rd Precinct ensured safety as Sharrotts Road was closed to accommodate the large crowd. Joe Causi, a longtime friend of the DiMartinos, reflected on the event's growth and its impact on the community. Viewing the display is free, but donations are encouraged to support the Pediatric Cancer Unit. Visitors are invited to share their experiences on social media using #LightsForLife. On December 16th, Northwell’s Staten Island University Hospital will join the DiMartinos for a Day of Surprises, adding to the festive spirit.
