A Special Day of Giving and Growing at Altoona High

At Altoona Area High School, a unique tradition brings students and staff together in a way that goes beyond typical classroom learning. The Friendsgiving event is a big deal, not just for the delicious food but for the sense of community and personal growth it fosters. This year, nearly 70 Life Skills students took charge of planning, preparing, and hosting a Thanksgiving-style meal. They shopped for ingredients, cooked everything from scratch, and even decorated the school’s drama commons. For these students, the event is more than just a meal; it’s a chance to practice life skills and show what they’ve learned. Paige Matteson, their teacher, has seen many of her students grow into confident young adults through this event. Some have been with her for six years, and it’s amazing to see how they’ve developed. Older students now mentor newer ones, taking on tasks without needing much guidance. The menu was a mix of classic Thanksgiving dishes, including chicken, corn casserole, and homemade bread. The students even added deviled eggs this year, showing their creativity. They learned about food safety, meal planning, and teamwork—skills that will help them in the future. The event also brought together students from emotional support classes, creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued. Junior Michael Mortimer loved seeing so many people enjoying the meal, while senior Aleah Dively felt proud but a little nervous serving food to so many. For senior Jordyn Barry, the event was a turning point. She found support and friendship through the program, which helped her improve in school and at home. Her emotional support teacher, Betsy Giansante, was touched by Jordyn’s progress and the positive impact of the event on all the students. Superintendent Brad Hatch highlighted how the event embodies the school’s values, celebrating what it means to be a caring and responsible part of the community. It’s clear that Friendsgiving is more than just a fun day—it’s a testament to the students’ hard work and growth.
