A Thrilling Showdown: LSU's Big Win in the College World Series
Omaha, Nebraska, USAMon Jun 23 2025
The 2025 College World Series saw a thrilling matchup between LSU and Coastal Carolina. LSU secured their second national title in just three seasons with a close 5-3 victory in Game 2. This win also marked the fifth consecutive championship for the SEC.
The Tigers found themselves tied 1-1 in the fourth inning. That's when Chris Stanfield stepped up with a bases-loaded single, driving in two crucial runs. Coastal Carolina's starter, Jacob Morrison, struggled to keep the Tigers at bay. Morrison, known for his impressive 12-0 record and 2. 08 ERA, allowed five runs and six hits in just 3 2/3 innings. This outing was his shortest and most challenging of the season.
Coastal Carolina's relievers tried to turn things around. Hayden Johnson and Darin Horn each struck out three batters, but the damage was already done. The Chanticleers had a tough time bouncing back from Morrison's early exit.
Anthony Eyanson, LSU's junior right-hander, had a strong performance. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two runs and six hits while striking out nine. Eyanson was pulled after allowing a two-run homer to Wells Sykes in the seventh inning. Sophomore Chase Shores came in to close the game, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
The Tigers' offense was led by Curiel and Stanfield, each driving in two runs. Ethan Frey and Daniel Dickinson also had strong performances at the plate. For Coastal Carolina, Dean Mihos hit 3-for-4 with a home run, and Sykes batted 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Before the game even got started, there was drama on the field. Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the first inning for arguing strike calls with the home plate umpire. This ejection led to an automatic two-game suspension for Schnall, which he will serve at the start of the next season. First-base coach Matt Schilling was also ejected and received a three-game penalty.
The game was intense from the start, with both teams giving it their all. LSU's victory was a testament to their resilience and skill, while Coastal Carolina showed they were a formidable opponent. The series highlighted the competitive nature of college baseball and the high stakes involved in the College World Series.
