A Towering Symbol of Peace Takes Over New York

In the heart of New York City, a massive sandstone Buddha statue is set to make a bold statement. This 27-foot-tall figure, crafted by artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen, will stand tall on the High Line's Plinth in 2026. The statue, named \"The Light That Shines Through the Universe, \" is a replica of one of the Bamiyan Buddhas, ancient figures destroyed in Afghanistan in 2001. Nguyen, a 49-year-old artist, was deeply moved by the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas. He saw the news on TV and was struck by the loss of these cultural icons. His artwork often explores themes of war, memory, and healing. This statue is his way of bringing back a piece of history and promoting peace.Born in Vietnam, Nguyen moved to the U. S. as a refugee when he was just three years old. He studied art and later returned to Vietnam, where he has created many notable works. His art has been shown in major exhibitions around the world, including the Singapore Biennale and the Bienal de São Paulo. The High Line Plinth commission process was competitive. Out of 56 submissions from artists worldwide, Nguyen's proposal stood out. A shortlist of 12 artists presented models, and public feedback was considered. Cecilia Alemani, the director of High Line Art, emphasized that public opinion played a role in the selection. This statue is more than just a piece of art. It's a symbol of resilience and a reminder of the importance of cultural heritage. As people walk along the High Line, they will see a piece of history standing tall, inviting them to reflect on its meaning.
